Tektite has the particularity of coming from space. It is a stone that is formed during the impact of a meteorite on the earth's soil. It belongs to the group of impactites, a group of minerals which appear during impact under the effect of high pressures and temperatures.

It should be noted that tektite is not a piece of meteorite, but crystallized debris which, upon cooling, gives rise to tektite. These are silicates transformed into glass: tektite is a black or brown, sometimes yellow, mineral stone.

Tektite has a hardness of 5 to 5.5 on the Mohs scale. For comparison, diamond has a hardness of 10, the highest on this same scale. It owes its name to the Greek “tectos” which means “melted”. Ejected from space before falling back to earth, it quickly finds itself vitrified and cooled. It can be confused with obsidian, however, it does not have absolutely the same composition.

Tektite is composed of several minerals of cosmic origin, such as iridium, platinum, nickel or cobalt. These materials cool quickly and turn into small pieces of natural glass, irregular or rounded in shape, with a diameter of no more than 4 cm. Tektites are often catapulted miles from the crater and given specific names depending on where they are found.

For Hindus, tektites, called “saitmantakmani”, are considered to be sacred stones of Krishna. The monks of Tibet called them “shambala”. At the same time, Eastern astrologers consider them more as “tears of the moon”. Tektite is traditionally used as a talisman.
