Collection: Vesuvianite

Vesuvianite gets its name because many of it is found on the slopes of Vesuvius in Italy. This mineral is a fluorinated hydroxylated silicate of calcium, aluminum, magnesium and iron. It comes in different colors: green, yellow-orange, even purple. It has a quadratic crystal system.

Vesuvianite can take the form of tetragonal prismatic crystals, short or elongated, nicely shaped and sometimes biterminated (having two endings, two points on each side of the crystal). Vesuvianite may also be referred to as idocrase. However, gemologists prefer to use the name vesuvianite.

For the record, the name “idocrase” comes from the Greek names “eidos” and “krausis” translating as “form” and “mixture”. This is in reference to its crystals, which are often a mixture of other mineral forms. In 1795, the famous German gemologist, Abraham Gottlob Werner (1749-1817) identified this mineral for the first time. Note: Werner was the mentor of Friedrich Mohs, creator of the hardness scale, still used today.

This stone is structurally and chemically close to grossular garnet, but its faces are striated. It is thus sometimes confused with, and even mixed and associated with. It has a hardness of 6.5 on the Mohs scale. For comparison, diamond has the highest hardness, 10 on this same scale.

This therefore gives it a hardness high enough to be used in jewelry and allow faceted cutting. Its green or yellow hues and its shine after polishing make it exceptional jewelry. Furthermore, it has a translucent or transparent appearance: its shine and hardness allow it to compete with many gems. Although it may have some inclusions, its beauty is not altered.

Sometimes vesuvianite is opaque: it will therefore be cut in the shape of a pear, cabochon, egg, sphere, etc. Vesuvianite is not subject to any processing other than cutting and polishing. It is of great interest to collectors who are looking for its different colors in the best possible quality.

The main deposits are located in the United States, China, Japan, Italy, etc.
