There are many minerals with fascinating stories, legends or myths, but there are also other minerals. Those, whose discoveries are so recent, that they have no history concerning them, which have not been used as an ointment and which no legend relates to them. Sugilite is one of them: it was discovered during the 20th century.
Its name and history are linked to the Japanese Sugi Ken-Ichi, mineralogist and petrologist (1901-1948), who during an excursion to the Iwagi islet in the southwest of Japan, discovered a beautiful purple crystal. This crystal was at the heart of an intrusion (set of rocks in a pre-existing geological formation) of syenite and aegrine. In 1944, he described it and called it sugilite.
Later, the IMA (International Mineralogical Association) validated this name in honor of this Japanese geologist. However, this stone is also known as lavulite (due to its lavender color), wesselite (from the Wessels mine in South Africa) or Royal Azel (from the Hotazel mine in South Africa).
Towards the end of the 1970s, jewelers discovered and used a variety containing manganese originating from South Africa. Everything suggests that it was also sugilite.
In the 1980s, it was the New Age movement that discovered this stone: sugilite would have a vibration that resonates with the “Age of Aquarius” and thus became popular. It mainly serves as a meditation support. Nowadays, it is mainly used in the manufacture of jewelry, lithotherapy objects and in the creation of art objects.
Sugilite is a variety of cyclosilicate and has a hexagonal crystal system. It is found in manganese and alkaline rock mines. It is mainly composed of sodium, iron silicate, lithium and potassium. Sugilite can have an opaque or, on the contrary, translucent appearance.
It has a hardness between 6.5 and 7 on the Mohs scale. For comparison, diamond has the highest hardness, 10 on this same scale. It is a stone that closely resembles charoite and lepidolite, but with its own particularities. Above all, it has a great richness of colors: this ore is found in different shades of purple, ranging from the lightest to the darkest. Some pieces feature a purple, yellow, green or light brown tone.
The main deposits are in South Africa, Australia, Canada, etc.
In Lithotherapy, sugilite is a stone of protection against negative energies, against bad luck, jealousy, resentment. Thus, it allows its wearer to have a more fulfilled life. It provides self-confidence, self-esteem and self-assurance. It allows you to overcome shyness, buried fears and anxieties.

Sugilite is recommended for students, people in retraining, professional training, artists. Indeed, this crystal promotes concentration, memorization and creativity. It is also popular during meditation sessions.
Also nicknamed the stone of love, this stone is a considerable support in couple relationships. It encourages quality communication and relationships based on trust.
This mineral is widely used in the fight against emotional stress. It calms agitated thoughts, provokes joy and positivism. Its wearer is more serene and relaxed. He can thus face the trials of life.
