Collection: Shattuckite

The formation of shattuckite takes place in the oxidation zone of copper mines, when water on the surface which contains silicic acid separates the copper from the rock. It is not uncommon for chrysocolla to be inserted with other minerals such as azurite, malachite or shattuckite. This stone is a copper hydroxide silicate. Its hardness is between 2 and 4 on the Mohs scale.

Shattuckite is a relatively new stone. In 1915, it was first discovered in Bisbee, Arizona's Shattuck Mine. This is how she got her name. This stone is a copper silicate stone. It does not contain aluminum. It is found blue in color, ranging from light blue to dark blue. It is in principle associated with various stones such as chrysocolla, thus offering a unique and particular color. Its hardness is 3.5 on the Mohs scale.

It should be noted that there is no legend or myth linked to this stone. No shattuckite has been found in archaeological excavations anywhere. On the other hand, chrysocolla has a very long history, as many civilizations around the world have a history with this mineral.

For example, in the year 1000 BC, King Solomon of Israel is said to have held magnificent copper mines. These mines produced a blue-green stone, then called King Solomon's stone. This fabulous stone was a combination of chrysocolla, malachite and turquoise.

But it was in 315 BC that this stone was described by the Greek philosopher Theophrastus. It is mainly used for soldering gold in the manufacture of jewelry. In fact, the name of this stone is derived from two Greek terms, namely “chrysos” and “kolla”, meaning “gold” and “glue”. The copper was recovered and used to solder the gold.

This chrysocolla stone has been attributed metaphysical properties since ancient Egypt. Moreover, it was even nicknamed “stone of wisdom”. Diplomats wore it during important negotiations in order to find favorable solutions. Queen Cleopatra herself decided to wear chrysocolla jewelry during her meetings with foreign ambassadors. Indeed, she was known to have a fiery temperament and this stone allowed her to be composed and calm.

In the Middle Ages, chrysocolla was reduced to powder and had medicinal properties, particularly for treating the stomach. It was also said to promote the healing of wounds and relieve certain vision problems.

During the Renaissance, chrysocolla was used as a pigment for painting. Traces have been discovered in the works of certain painters or on wall frescoes.

More generally, throughout several civilizations, notably that of the South American Indians, chrysocolla was used as a talisman. Indeed, it served to protect warriors and provide them with strength and physical resistance.

The main deposits of shattuckite are found in South Africa, Namibia, the United States, Argentina and Chile.
