Collection: lava stone

Of volcanic origin, lava stone results from the cooling of molten magma released during volcanic eruptions. The magma is at a temperature of 1000°C then it is suddenly exposed to the outside temperature. When the lava from the volcano comes into contact with the atmosphere, it cools and creates the famous lava stones. Lava stones are actually flows of cooled magma.

Lava stone is also called basalt. It is composed of 50% plagioclase, 25% to 40% pyroxenes, 10% to 20% olivine. It mainly makes up the earth's crust and the oceanic crust. This basalt is also found on the moon in the form of immense expanses of solidified lava called lunar seas.

The different minerals have proportions which differ depending on whether it is an effusive or intrusive volcano and depending on the nature of the magma. When lava stone forms, accelerated crystallization of fine grains occurs, generating a large quantity of crystals. Stone with a hardness of 5.5 on the Mohs scale, it has colors ranging from light gray to black. The color of the stone varies depending on its chemical composition.
