Collection: Manganocalcite

Manganocalcite is a mineral that belongs to the calcite group. This mineral is composed of calcium carbonate and manganese.

It is actually a calcite with a high manganese content. Calcite is a mineral that can display many colors depending on its components. It can be white, green, yellow, red or pink.

Calcite has a composition including different metals such as iron, zinc, copper, lead, magnesium, strontium, barium, aluminum, vanadium, nickel, chromium, cobalt or manganese. The variety of calcite containing manganese is therefore called manganocalcite or sometimes pink calcite. Indeed, manganocalcite is pink with white inclusions.

The higher the manganese concentration in the calcite, the darker the manganocalcite will be, possibly going as far as red. It can be confused with rhodocrosite. These stones are very similar, it is ultimately the quantity of manganese that will differentiate them.

Manganocalcite has a rhombohedral trigonal crystal system. For the record, a rhombohedron is a 3-dimensional polyhedron, resembling a cube, but with diamond-shaped faces.

It has a hardness of 3 to 4 on the Mohs scale, making it a relatively soft stone. For example, diamond has the highest hardness, 10 on this same scale.

Manganocalcite or pink calcite comes from the Latin “calx” meaning “limestone” and mangano is used as a prefix to indicate the presence of manganese. Indeed, Pliny the Elder (23 AD / 79 AD), famous naturalist, describes it perfectly in his encyclopedia Natural Stories, as well as all other types of calcite.

However, there is very little information regarding manganocalcite, as it was not differentiated from calcite. So legends and myths mention calcite, but not manganocalcite in particular.

Calcite formation occurs when liquid calcium, shells, corals and algae settle on the muddy bottom of an ocean or salt lake. Then, this whole solidifies, then the sedimentation process begins. Sedimentation occurs when particles of different matter stop moving and come together in layers.

This stone has the property of being fluorescent. When exposed to a black light lamp, it then reveals a resplendent pink color.

Today, manganocalcite is used in the creation of jewelry and in lithotherapy. It is also used in the industrial sector in the manufacture of cement and lime.

The main deposits are located in Peru.
