Collection: Liberity

The blue liberite stone has no legend or myth concerning it.

In 1964, this stone was described and discovered by a man named Chao in the Hsianghua Ridge mine located in Hunan, China.

Its name is made up of several particles linked to the elements that compose it:

  • Li: abbreviation for lithium silicate. It has the particularity of crystallizing in the orthorhombic system;

  • Be: abbreviation for beryllium silicate. Beryllium is a rare element found in gemstones such as aquamarine, beryl and emerald. Silicates are mainly minerals;

  • Ite (like îtes in ancient Greek): which means mineral.

Liberite also contains silicon and oxygen. It appears in the form of an aggregate composed of several minerals such as hsianghualite (silicate) and bromelite (oxide). It is in fact a heterogeneous assembly of these elements which are firmly joined together. The whole forms a type of mica called phlogopite (mineral from the silicate group).

For information, silicates belong to the most important family of minerals: that of feldspars, quartz, pyroxene, etc. They mainly make up magmatic and metamorphic rocks. Furthermore, the majority of minerals listed on Earth are in reality oxides, which are also very widespread in the universe.

It ranks among the new stones, despite the fact that it is primarily a mineral. Indeed, it is very likely that it existed well before its discovery. But the characteristic of man is to name things to recognize their existence.
