Collection: Diamond

The black diamond also goes by the name Carbonado. It was so named when it was discovered by Brazilians in the 18th century. Its name means charred or burned due to its intense black color. Jewelry became interested in this black diamond relatively late in the 19th century. Then this stone really increased in value during the 20th century.

Three versions concerning its origin exist and gemologists do not reach a common conclusion:

  • One theory explains that this diamond was formed during the organic transformation of carbon. It was subjected to Earth's high temperatures and pressures;
  • A second theory states that this diamond resulted from the impact of a meteorite which took place several million years ago;
  • The third theory involves a supernova explosion. For the record, a supernova is “all the phenomena which result from the implosion of a star at the end of its life, notably forming a gigantic explosion”. The debris from this star would have been scattered on Earth.

The most commonly accepted version is that of the collision between the Earth and an asteroid. The debris from this impact mainly spread over Africa and Brazil, countries where this gem is found in quantity.

Another special feature of black diamond is that it is found on the surface of the Earth and there are mines of black diamonds on the surface of the Earth.
