Collection: Crystal Diamond Herkimer

Herkimer Diamond is actually a very pure rock crystal, named after the Herkimer province located in New York State in the United States.
Specimens have also been discovered in the Mohawk River Valley. In addition, the Ace of Diamonds and Herkimer Diamonds mines are open and accessible to the public. You simply purchase a ticket at the entrance and then it is easy to start searching for this fabulous crystal.

It should be noted that about fifteen mines are exploited in this state, but not all of them are open to the public. The Herkimer diamond is extracted from a rock called “dolomite”. Dolomite is a carbonate sedimentary rock composed of dolomite, whose formation was very slow and occurred about 500 million years ago. We can say that the Herkimer diamond is younger since it is only 325 million years old! It would have formed during the Carboniferous period, over the years and with a higher temperature.

These beautiful rock crystals can be colorless, cloudy or smoky, due to the inclusions they may contain such as those of anthraxolites (carbonaceous material with a shiny luster resembling coal) or those of decomposing plants. For the record, the rarest inclusion is that of yellow oil.

Herkimer diamonds are beautiful quartz crystals of incredible purity, clarity and extremely rare brilliance. These crystals are generally biterminated (said of a crystal with two points or terminations) and naturally faceted. They do indeed give the impression of having been cut by man, but this is not the case. This aspect of purity has earned the commercial name of diamond for this rock crystal.

Sometimes some Herkimer diamonds have bubbles that are actually water bubbles. They have a hardness of 7.5 on the Mohs scale, exactly like quartz crystals. The real diamond has a hardness of 10. These Herkimer diamonds mostly have 18 faces: 6 triangular for the pointed ends and 6 faces.

In the Native American tradition, especially the Iroquois, the Mohawks regularly used this stone which they considered very precious. They made amulets, concoctions to bring the patient to heal. This crystal allowed them to develop their gifts of clairvoyance and vision. In fact, Indian alchemy associated it with the philosopher's stone.

In India, the Herkimer diamond is said to be somewhere between rock crystal and diamond.

The main deposits are located in the United States, Pakistan, Canada, etc.
