Collection: Chalcopyrite

Listed in 1725 by Henckel (1678-1744), a Saxon doctor, mineralogist, metallurgist and chemist, the chalcopyrite stone owes its name from the Greek “khalkos” meaning copper and pyrite, because it resembles this stone. It is a copper mineral from Mexico.

This chalcopyrite stone has magnificent iridescent colors ranging from green, gold, pink, purple to blue. She was nicknamed “peacock stone” by the miners. All of its many colors are caused by the oxidation of copper and iron present in the crystal.

Chalcopyrite crystals are natural minerals, which are also called yellow copper. Chalcopyrite is composed of copper sulfide and iron sulfide, causing these incredible reflections.

This stone has a hardness of 3.5 to 4 on the Mohs scale and a crystal system.

It is called copper pyrite when its copper content is greater in its composition. We can say that chalcopyrite stone is from the same family as pyrite.

The most beautiful species of this chalcopyrite stone are located in Slovakia. The minerals found in this location on the earth consist of quartz and white crystals of magnesite. These minerals have qualities that add to those of chalcopyrite, accentuating its incredible beauty.

Chalcopyrite is found in hydrothermal veins (result of filling from bottom to top due to hot aqueous inflows linked to intrusions of magmatic rocks). Copper ore is extremely concentrated and occurs in compact masses with the presence of many other minerals.

This mineral is mainly exploited because of its high copper content. At the same time, its crystals are sought after by collectors.

Chalcopyrite stone is also associated with the goddess Athena and the planet Mars. Athena is the daughter of Zeus and Metis. The myth says that it came out of the head of Zeus, already adult and armed. She became the goddess of war, wisdom, arts and science.

Furthermore, it is said that the gold reflections of this chalcopyrite stone long caused confusion among miners during the gold rush. In fact, they could no longer distinguish whether it was pyrite, chalcopyrite or gold. Chalcopyrite was then named Fool's Gold. However, what miners did not know at that time was that chalcopyrite or pyrite also contained gold.

The main deposits are in Peru, France, Australia, Canada, China, etc.
