Cat's eye tourmaline is one of the rarest varieties of tourmaline. It is so named because of the phenomenon of light reflection that is reminiscent of a cat's slit eye. This phenomenon is called chatoyancy. This optical peculiarity is exceptionally rare and is found in only a handful of gemstones. It is caused by the presence of tiny parallel fibers or needle-like inclusions in the stone. When exposed to light, as the stone turns, a cat's eye-shaped reflection can be seen on the surface of the tourmaline.

Cat's eye tourmaline is particularly sought after by collectors or jewelers. It has a hardness of 7 to 7.5 on the Mohs scale. For comparison, diamond has a hardness of 10, the maximum hardness on this same scale. Cat's eye tourmaline is generally translucent and in different colors. It is found in green, pink, yellow, orange, blue to blue-green, purple to red, green to brown, black.

Cat's eye tourmaline is generally translucent to opaque. When cut and polished, it has a vitreous to resinous luster. It is mostly cut into oval or pear cabochon shapes to maximize the chatoyancy of the stone. It is worth noting that cat's eye tourmaline is not heated, treated, or artificially enhanced.
