Serpentine is not a mineral species but a family of minerals of the silicate group subgroup of phyllosilicates. This family contains more than 20 members or polymorphs and is found in metamorphic rocks rich in hydroxides of iron, aluminum, manganese, nickel, zinc, calcium and/or magnesium. Their olive coloring as well as their soft and scaly appearance is the origin of the name of their original rocks, the ophidian rocks coming from the Greek ophidis, serpent, and its mineral form serpentine which comes from the Latin serpentinus which means stone snake.
