This stone, like all stones bearing the name "eye", belongs to the family of microcrystalline quartz. There is also the red-brown bull's eye (which in some cases is a heated tiger's eye), the blue-tinted hawk's eye, and the metallic-tinted iron eye. These stones exhibit remarkable chatoyancy. This is an optical effect formerly called cat's eye.

The name tiger's eye appeared later in Europe, due to its resemblance to the eye of the wild animal. In reality, it refers to the fibers of the stone that display a gradient of colors, changing depending on the viewing angle. There is also golden tiger's eye. This is a tiger's eye with golden yellow colors.
