Leopardite is also called oncolith or leopard jasper. An oncolith (or oncolite) (from the Greek onkos, nodule or tumor, and lithos, stone) is a calcareous rock formed of more than 50% oncoids. They are generally rounded or flattened (pebble-shaped) and can be metallic (ferruginous..). Such rocks are typical for having formed in a shallow marine environment, with or without the intervention of bacteria. Oncoliths can be ferruginous.
