Jasper is a sedimentary rock containing 80 to 95% silica, often classified with microcrystalline quartz but which can also contain clay. It is made up of chalcedony radiolarians set in chalcedony cement. Its fracture is scaly, sometimes conchoidal. Jasper can have several appearances: spotted, banded, red (or oriental), with red spots on a green background, black (from Sicily), etc. Its essential characteristic is its wide range of natural colors; we can estimate, a priori, that no color is impossible for jasper.
