Fossil agate or Turitella agate is one of these ancient stones which passes on its benefits to those around it. It has considerable powers and has symbolized prosperity and abundant money for centuries. This fossil agate is also called shell agate or turritella agate.
The name agate like all other kinds of agates comes from the Achates River of Sicily. It is indeed in this river that the first agates were discovered. The Greeks therefore named them “agate”, which means “that which is good”.
Then fossil agate or turitelle agate appeared. Its name comes from shells, snails called turitelle. Which is very curious because the formation of this agate took place in old dry lakes and the turitella is an ocean gastropod. Today, this type of fossil snail has not been definitively recorded as a freshwater fossil.
In reality, the first traces of fossil agate are complicated to establish with certainty. We have writings dating from Pliny, an ancient naturalist, appearing to describe fossil agate, and more recent writings from Buffon, a 16th century French naturalist and mathematician. Note that this stone has several names (fossil agate, turitella agate, shell agate), which does not make the task easy!
In any case, it is an agate from the quartz family, black/gray in color with brown or white spots and with encrusted shell fragments. These fossilized shells are caught in silica. The etymology of its name comes from these shells.
