Agate has had its name since three or four centuries BC. It was attributed to him by the Greek philosopher Theophrastus (371 BC / 288 BC). Indeed, he discovered it in the Akhates river in southern Italy, and even in Sicily. Today, the river is called the Dirillo and it is still quite possible to find, all along this river, several types of agate, in multiple colors, yellow, red, blue, pink, etc.
But gray agate is not only found in this river. Its formation takes place in volcanic rocks, whether effusive, extrusive or volcanic. Mostly, it is located in cavities in basalt or rhyolite, but it can also form in sedimentary rocks.
Gray agate is mainly made up of chalcedony and quartz, and mostly silica. The presence of iron and manganese oxides gives it its ribbonlike appearance and its white bands. It has a hardness of 6.5 to 7 on the Mohs scale. For comparison, diamond has a hardness of 10 on this same scale, the highest hardness.
All the characteristics of gray agate cited above are accurate for all agates. However, gray agate stands out slightly, because it is made up of various pieces of shells buried at the bottom of the sea. Be careful not to mix it with fossil agate, however.
In reality, the name gray agate covers several stones such as gray Botswana agate, dendritic agate, gray crazy lace agate. Traces of these agates were found during archaeological excavations. Since Antiquity, gray agate has already been used in the manufacture of various jewelry, amulets or ornamental objects.

The main deposits are located in Madagascar, Botswana and India.
