Kunzite is a stone discovered in 1902 in California by George Frederick Kunz. A lover of gemstones since his adolescence, he gathered a collection of 4,000 specimens when he was not even an adult.

Needing money, he sold his fabulous collection for $400 to the University of Minnesota. Self-taught, he is passionate about stones. He becomes an expert without any training. His talents were recognized by Tiffany & Co, which hired him. Then, he was named vice-president at barely 23 years old. His expertise in stones made him a very renowned American mineralogist.

Kunzite was taken for a tourmaline, but various analyzes showed that it was a spodumene with an as yet unknown color. For information, spodumene is a pegmatitic mineral (magmatic rock with large crystals) with a glassy appearance. It is almost white in the low iron variety and goes to dark green in the high iron crystals.

Some spodumenes have their own name such as kunzite, which is differentiated by its lilac-pink color. It owes this fabulous color to the manganese it contains. There is also hiddenite with a yellowish green color, due to the presence of iron or emerald green due to that of chromium. The yellow or colorless variety of spodumene is called triphane.

In 1903, Professor Charles Baskerville studied pink spodumene more closely, which was nicknamed “the Californian iris”. He then decided to name it in homage to the man who discovered it. Thus was born the name kunzite which replaces that of “California iris”.

There are no legends or myths associated with this stone. On the other hand, its incredible pink color is the symbol of femininity. Pink is also the color of romance. It is often associated with stories of the heart. It is also attributed with the power of being a calming color.

In esoteric circles, pink is the color associated with the heart chakra, itself in relation to feelings, such as love, compassion and kindness.

Color and shine are the elements that will determine the value of a kunzite stone. The darker the stone, the more expensive it will be. Gemologists refer to pink, blue-violet, red-violet, purple-red or violet-red spodumenes as kunzite. It has a hardness of 6 to 7 on the Mohs scale.

Kunzite crystals do not have inclusions visible to the naked eye. They give an impression of purity. Kunzite has the property of being phosphorescent, which means that it stores light and partly diffuses it in the dark. It also has the power to have strong pleochroism, that is to say that its color changes depending on the angle of its exposure.

The main deposits are located in Brazil, Afghanistan, Madagascar and Pakistan.

Kunzite is a stone of serenity and calming. It is directly related to the heart chakra. It therefore has the power to significantly reduce the harmful effects of stress and anxiety.

This protective stone neutralizes negative energies, removes buried fears and has a shielding action against harmful influences. Indeed, it intensifies the energy field surrounding the body.

Often cited as a stone of tenderness, kunzite stimulates the heart and mind. Thus, it helps to bring balance between the mind and the emotions. It arouses unconditional love.

Its beautiful pink color connects it to femininity and romanticism. It provides thoughts filled with tenderness and affection. It opens its wearer to communication and exchanges with others. It encourages the desire to be of service and to help.

Kunzite facilitates interventions during conflicts and generates understanding. It is recommended during heartbreaks and fears about the future of a couple. This stone exudes gentleness and kindness.

Wearing a kunzite stimulates concentration in both adults and children. It provides the necessary calm during exams or job interviews and alleviates apprehensions. Furthermore, it helps to de-dramatize complicated situations.
