Shungite owes its name to the place where it is extracted, in a Russian village called Shunga, located on the shores of Lake Onega.

According to legend, Xenia Godunov, daughter of Tsar Boris Fyodorovich Godunov (1551-1605), could no longer have children. But after drinking water from a spring that flowed from black stones, she regained her fertility and founded a large family.

However, the virtues of this water have been known for at least five centuries thanks to a legend that tells of a star crashing to earth. This star then transformed into water.

Later, in the 18th century, the exploitation of the virtues of this lake and its stones was developed thanks to Emperor Peter the Great (1672-1725). At first, he went there with his doctor to treat his fragile health. He took baths, drank shungite elixir and his health improved greatly. He regained vitality and energy.

He then decided to fight against the dysentery that struck his soldiers. He made them drink shungite solutions renamed Waters of Mars in honor of the Roman god of war. Then, in the last ten years of his life, he had a thermal establishment built near the springs and treated many people suffering from epilepsy or uremia. Thus were born the first thermal cures.

In 1996, Americans Robert Curl, Richard Smalley and British Harold Kroto were awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry by the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences. Through their research, they discovered fullerenes (the third known form of carbon), present in the composition of thermal waters, beneficial for certain diseases. The use of shungite in natural preparations provides many benefits.

Shungite exists in the form of two minerals:

  • Silver shungite, which is very rare, represents only 1% of all shungites. It has a very high content of fullerene, about 98%.
  • Black shungite: the most widespread and most used and easier to chisel due to its low fullerenes composition (between 50% and 70%).

It should be noted that when the concentration of fullerenes is less than 50%, we are talking about shungite rock and not shungite stone.

Some farmers mix shungite into the soil to make a natural mineral fertilizer. Shungite has the property of retaining moisture and provides calcium and phosphorus. Studies have been conducted in Kazakhstan on a few farms and the yield was increased by 20 to 40%.

The hardness of shungite is between 3.5 and 4 on the Mohs scale. In comparison, diamond has a hardness of 10, the highest on this same scale.

Its existence dates back to more than 2 billion years approximately. It would have been born following the mineralization of plankton. Others claim that shungite would be pieces of the planet Phaeton, located between Mars and Jupiter. It was destroyed and gave birth to the asteroid belt. Finally, other researchers have discovered a volcanic origin to shungite.

The main deposit of shungite is therefore in Russia, in the village of Shunga, on the shores of Lake Onega.

Shungite is a stone of deep anchoring to the earth. It promotes reconciliation with one's inner self. It eliminates discomfort by finding the reasons for blockages linked to childhood traumas. It allows one to move forward in life, to find the courage to overcome the difficulties encountered. It causes a reconciliation with oneself which engenders self-esteem, confidence and assurance.

This beautiful black mineral is said to open its wearer to creativity and success. It is a shield against the harmful energies of certain people. It keeps away jealousies, resentments, bad influences.

Shungite is a stone with a strong protective power against electromagnetic waves. It neutralizes radiation and disturbances caused by waves from modern wireless devices (computer, telephone, Wi-Fi, etc.). It effectively fights against cosmo-telluric nuisances (faults, underground water tables or underground rivers).

Furthermore, for your information, Régine Martino, a shungite specialist, has written a book entitled “Shungite, the energy of life”. To work in a serene atmosphere or simply to feel good at home, shungite can be placed anywhere and spread its protection.
