Fluorite or fluorite is a very popular stone because of its varied colors. A soft stone with a hardness of 4 on the Mohs scale, it cleaves very easily, that is to say it splits in the natural direction of its layers with a clean cut. It is a mineral mainly composed of calcium fluoride.
Pure, it is colorless, so it is organic compounds or various metals, such as iron, cerium, magnesium, chlorine, silicon, etc., which determine its different colors. Fluorite offers a wide range of colors, from blue to yellow, green to brown, pink to purple, etc. Some of its crystals are particularly exceptional because their colors change depending on their exposure to light.
For example, metallurgists in the 16th century discovered that ores containing fluorite fluidized more easily. Also, in his famous work Re Metallica, Georgius Agricola (1494-1555), founder of metallurgy and mineralogy, names this stone “fluores lapides” meaning “flowing stone”. Subsequently, it will become fluorite, then by extension, will then give its name to the gas that constitutes it: fluorine.
The crystallizations of fluorite, as well as its different colors, make it a stone very popular with collectors. But mineral stores or jewelry stores only represent a small amount of the exploitation of this fabulous mineral. In reality, the history of fluorite is marked by the discovery of fluorine in 1886. Fluorine is in fact a halogen gas, relatively abundant and with multiple properties exploited in industry. Before this date, fluorite was mainly used to make jewelry sets, ornamental objects, statuettes, etc.
Indeed, necklaces of fluorite beads were discovered in prehistoric caves in Belgium. In ancient Egypt, fluorite was used as an ornamental stone or to sculpt statuettes in honor of the gods or amulets in the shape of a scarab. The Chinese sometimes replaced jade with green fluorite in the making of their statues and used purple fluorite to protect against evil spirits.
More generally, fluorite, thanks to its multiple colors, was used in the manufacture of the famous Murrhin vases. In fact, these vases were made of murrhe, which turns out to be fluorite.
The Greeks associated yellow fluorite with intelligence and know-how. This mineral develops reflection and skill.
During archaeological excavations, objects made of fluorite were found in the ruins of Pompeii, a famous city completely buried during an eruption of Vesuvius in 79 AD.
More recently, in the 18th century, mines which were full of "Blue John", famous yellow and blue fluorite, were exploited in the Sheffield region in England. Many ornamental objects, decorative elements, vases or columns were created in Blue John.
In France, the first exploitation of fluorite in Voltenne, in Saône-et-Loire, is at the origin of the constitution of the balustrades of the Opéra Garnier in Paris.
Today, metallurgy is the largest consumer of fluorite. As for the steel industry, it uses it as a fluidizer or as a flux.
Yellow fluorite is one of the crystals extremely appreciated by mineralogists. It has remarkable cubes: it is one of the most beautiful creations of nature, very luminous, soft and glassy.
The main deposits are found in China, Canada, France, etc.
In Lithotherapy, yellow fluorite, with its energizing and soft color, gives tone and vitality to its wearer. It is a stone of joy and good humor. She brings happiness to those around her, even a certain euphoria. It is a stone of spirituality promoting emotional balance in a person's life.
Yellow fluorite is also known to be an organizing mineral. Indeed, it opens up a certain intellectual clarity and thus puts an end to instability and disorder. The consequences will be better memorization, easier learning, and quality concentration.
Thus, yellow fluorite is said to be the stone of intellectuals, such as students, scientists, researchers, etc. Indeed, it also allows better mental integration of new ideas or the easy assimilation of new technologies.
Yellow fluorine is very effective in managing strong emotions. It soothes and reduces stress, anxiety and anxiety. It allows you to free yourself from traumatic psychological blockages linked to the past or not and to move forward in life. Yellow fluorite offers the possibility of overcoming buried fears and provides self-confidence. It helps to alleviate anger, jealousy, resentment and soothes its wearer.
