In ancient civilizations, stones were identified according to their color and physical characteristics. This blue stone was discovered by the French paleontologist Eugène Dumortier (1802 - 1876) during an expedition in the Alps. It was named dumortierite by the French mineralogist Ferdinand Gonnard (1838 - 1923) in homage to the famous Eugène Dumortier. But under the name of dumortierite, the blue stone has no assigned legend. In fact, its history is very short. However, dumortierite has been found on pre-Columbian cemetery sites.
However, it turns out that this blue stone had already been identified before being named dumortierite. It was confused with lapis lazuli, sodalite or azurite. It was only its structure that allowed it to be distinguished. Note that there is also dumortierite quartz. However, it even happened that this stone was sold near Lyon for lapis lazuli. The confusion dates back to Antiquity and lasted until the 19th century.
However, some people knew perfectly well that the lapis lazuli discovered in Lyon was not really a lapis. But this information was jealously guarded secret by the “Ancient Schools”. Nowadays, it still happens that the “lapis of Lyon” is in fact dumortierite. It should be noted that dumortierite has sometimes been called aluminum borosilicate, but this scientific designation was quickly abandoned.
Dumortierite is mainly blue in color, but purple to brown specimens can also be found. It has a hardness of 7 on the Mohs scale, which makes it a particularly popular stone among jewelers and jewelers. It is mainly composed of aluminum and boron silicate (a simple solid body close to carbon) with traces of magnesium and iron. It is the high concentration of aluminum that gives it this blue appearance.
The natural stone dumortierite is rather opaque. Thus, it is this opacity that does not allow it to belong to the family of precious stones. It is a fibrous mineral that is found in metamorphic rocks in places concentrated in aluminum. Metamorphic rocks were formed during the transformation to the solid state according to certain parameters such as pressure and / or temperature.
Dumortierite is mainly used in the manufacture of jewelry. In specialty stores, it is offered in its natural state, raw or polished, in the form of an egg, sculpted. Its incredible color with its reflections blends perfectly with metals such as gold or silver.
The main deposits are located in Brazil, Australia, Canada, Germany, France, etc.
