A legend tells that in the 15th century, in a gallery located on the mountainside, miners discovered with amazement bouquets of mineral flowers and petrified plants of various colors. They decided to name them “iron flowers”.
In reality, aragonite was discovered in 1609 by Anselmus Boëtius de Boodt, a famous mineralogist. He named it “stillatitius lapis”. Its appearance in the form of bouquets of flowers with more or less long tips, brown, blue, green colors would be the origin of this nickname “iron flowers”.
Then it was the German geologist, Abraham Gottlob Werner (1749 - 1818) who gave it the name aragonite. Indeed, he took up a Spanish legend which tells of a young girl from the town of Molina d'Aragon who was refused marriage to her beloved because she was being promoted to another suitor. She shed many tears which transformed into aragonite on contact with the earth. He had assumed that this land was Aragonese when in reality it was Castilian. The name stuck despite this confusion.
