Since Antiquity, fluorite has been a stone particularly appreciated by several civilizations. Some even thought that this stone crystallized light.

Fluorite is known for its varied and beautiful colors. Indeed, we find it in blue, green, yellow, pink, purple, and even multicolor. Pure, it is transparent. These are organic compounds or various metals which give it its multiple colors.

Fluorite is a very abundant mineral in the world. It is mainly found in metamorphic rocks (rocks having undergone a structural and mineralogical transformation due to a change in pressure and/or temperature) and in granite mines.

The composition of fluorite is made of calcium fluoride and its crystallization is generally cubic in shape. Some varieties are fluorescent and others change color depending on the light. It has a hardness of 4 on the Mohs scale (in comparison, diamond has a hardness of 10 and emerald has a hardness of 8).

Nowadays, the use of fluorite in jewelry making is less compared to its use for industrial purposes. It makes it possible to produce hydrofluoric acid and derived products such as aluminum fluoride. In industry, it is used in the production of enamel, spectacle lenses, lenses for astronomy, etc. It is renowned for its qualities of refraction and chromatic dispersion.

Steel manufacturers use fluorite as a flux. In fact, in the 16th century, metallurgists discovered that ores with fluorite fluidized much more quickly. In 1797, Carlo Antonio Galeani Napione (1757 - 1814) studied fluorite and decided to name it “fluere”, which means “which melts”. Writings dating from the Middle Ages mention fluorite by calling it “ore flower”.

Most recently, in the 18th century, a fluorite of two shades, yellow and blue, was discovered in the Sheffield region of England. Many collectors appreciate this specimen which bears the name “Blue John”.
