Green porphyry from Greece is a variety of porphyry widely used by the Romans and then in Italy in religious architecture. It is recognizable by its color and light green feldspar crystals, sometimes with inclusions of blue or mauve chalcedony. Its bright color and hardness make it a favorite stone for paving, associated with other porphyries, such as red imperial porphyry, and marble. It is found in Saint Mark's in Venice, but also in Saint Peter's in Rome in the Vatican. Green porphyry is an extremely rare porphyry, which has never given rise to intensive exploitation. The largest blocks found were used in Antiquity and the Renaissance in the form of columns.
