Diopside is a mineral species belonging to the group of silicates, subgroup of inosilicates of the clinopyroxene family. It is green or very dark green in color for the "Black Star" variety.
This stone is slightly magnetic. The asterism that is found only in cabochon stones is a phenomenon that is due to the way light is reflected by tiny star-shaped crystal inclusions.
Chromo-diopside is a variety of Diopside with a high chromium content.
The name Diopside comes from the Greek dis, which means twice, and opsis: sight, vision.
