This stone, like all stones bearing the name eye, belongs to the microcrystalline quartz family. There is also red-brown bull's eye (which in some cases is heated tiger's eye), blue-tinted hawk's eye, metallic-tinted iron-eye. These stones have remarkable chatoyance. This is an optical effect formerly called cat's eye.
The name tiger's eye appeared later in Europe, because of its resemblance to the eye of the wild beast. In reality, these are the fibers of the stone which display a gradient of colors, changing depending on the angle of view. There is also the golden tiger's eye.
