We find calcite in different forms and various colors. Calcite is mainly composed of calcium carbonate. Thus, it is present in many living beings (such as shells or corals) or in the skeletons of all vertebrates. It is therefore found in multiple rocks.
Calcite essentially surprises with all the appearances it can take. It can be colored, transparent, in the form of crystals or in a compact and rather white form such as marble. It is its presence in many rocks that gives it all these different aspects.
A single mineral with so many varied profiles attracts the attention of scientists. JB Romée de l'Isle (18th century) counted 26 varieties, then Abbot René Just Haüy (19th century) identified 112. Then the Count of Bournon (19th century) wrote two complete books on 800 varieties of calcite. We then decide to classify them according to their appearance:
-
the crystallized form;
-
the fibrous form (like stalactites);
-
the saccharoid form (like sugar);
-
the earthy form (like chalk);
-
the compact form (the most widespread, entire mountains such as those of the Jura).
All the morphologies of this calcite stone can be explained by their presence in rocks of very different constitutions, such as those of sedimentary origin, those of magmatic or metamorphic origins.
In its raw appearance, calcite is white or transparent. Indeed, it is small mineralogical differences or various inclusions that give calcites their color (yellow, orange, blue, green, etc.).
Calcite has special characteristics such as fluorescence or birefringence (allows you to see things twice through a calcite crystal).
Its name comes from the Latin “calx”, meaning burnt lime or calcined stone. From the 19th century, the term calcite referred to the mineral known today. France will retain the name “carbonated lime” for a long time.
There are no special legends or myths regarding calcite. We have only found its trace through various civilizations. There are so many varieties that it could very well have been confused with other precious stones linked to mythologies.
Egypt and ancient civilizations used colored calcite to make statuettes and ornamental objects. At that time, white calcite was called “Egyptian alabaster” or “limestone alabaster”. From a simple vase to the construction of pyramids, this noble stone is used for these various achievements.
In ancient Rome, the Romans also used it as marble.
In the 17th century, enormous progress was made in mineralogy. Thus, the Swede Johan Gottschalk Wallerius (1709-1785) evokes a very precise description of a very pure calcite, Icelandic spar. He became the first to highlight the characteristics of this crystal, namely phosphorescence and birefringence.
Green calcite obtains its wonderful color due to the presence of nickel impurities.
The main deposits are in Mexico, USA, Brazil, etc.
