The name of the chalcedony stone comes from the Latin chalcedonius or the Greek khalkedon. In fact, there was an ancient city called Chalcedonya (or Chalcedony), located on the Bosphorus (in modern-day Turkey). A river which passed nearby was named Chalcedon, probably in reference to Apollo's grandson, Calchas. Some time later, the Greeks settled in this place without changing the name.

The city of Carthage may also be the origin of the name chalcedony. Moreover, Pliny the Elder, a Roman naturalist writer from the 1st century, mentions it in his encyclopedia entitled Natural History.

Chalcedony is a variety of quartz embedded with tiny crystals. This stone has a translucent appearance with a color ranging from blue to gray to green. Indeed, the colors vary depending on the inclusions present in the stone.

It should be noted that the term chalcedony refers to all varieties of microcrystalline and cryptocrystalline quartz. It is more precisely a silica mineral composed of quartz and morganite. Chalcedony is from the same family as agates. Common chalcedony is called chalcedony, or chalcedony, or chalcedonite or even merlinite.
Chalcedony has no legend or myths. Nevertheless, we find its traces throughout history for millennia. Discovered in Asia Minor 4000 years BC, the chalcedony stone probably owes its name to the city Khalkedon because of the numerous deposits discovered.
At that time, the Babylonians and Assyrians used this stone for the manufacture of tools or for cylinder seals, which allowed the protection of documents.
From ancient times, we have seen that Pliny the Elder described this chalcedony stone in his encyclopedia in the 1st century AD. This is the first written trace that mentions this stone. Then we find it in the Book of Revelation of the New Testament. In the chapter relating the construction of the Temple of King Solomon, a surrounding wall is built of fine stones and it seems that the third foundation is made of chalcedony.
The trade in chalcedony takes place from Carthage (Tunisia). They are exported by the maritime route bordering the eastern and southern rim of the Mediterranean to the West.
In the Middle Ages, the virtues of green chalcedony were widely discussed. The lapidaries of this period described it as possessing powers, notably those of curing epileptics.
Since the Renaissance, many artists have returned to stone cutting and engraving. Glyptics, the art of cutting and engraving fine stones, is in full vogue, whether with hollow sculpture (intaglio) or relief (cameo). Chalcedony is often used to represent scenes and people from mythology.
Chalcedony is found in large quantities in the creation of decorative objects or in tableware.
The main deposits are found in Brazil, India, etc.
