Cat's eye tourmaline is one of the rarest varieties of tourmaline. It bears this name because of the phenomenon of light reflection which is reminiscent of a cat's slit eye. This phenomenon is called chatoyance. This optical feature is exceptionally rare and is only found in a handful of fine stones. It is caused by the presence of tiny parallel fibers or needle-like inclusions in the stone. Exposed to light, when the stone turns, we can see a reflection in the shape of a cat's eye on the surface of the tourmaline.
Cat's eye tourmaline is particularly sought after by collectors and jewelers. It has a hardness of 7 to 7.5 on the Mohs scale. For comparison, diamond has a hardness of 10, the maximum hardness on this same scale. Cat's eye tourmaline usually comes in translucent and in different colors. We find it in green, pink, yellow, orange, blue to blue-green, purple to red, green to brown, black.
Cat's eye tourmaline is generally translucent to opaque. Once cut and polished, it has a glassy to resinous luster. It is mainly cut in the shape of an oval or pear-shaped cabochon to maximize the chatoyancy of the stone. It is worth emphasizing that cat's eye tourmaline is not artificially heated, processed or enhanced.
The main deposits are located in South Africa, etc.
