The Tiffany Stone is a stone discovered in 1969 in the United States, west of Utah, in a mine called Wellman Beryllium Mine, closed today.
This fabulous stone is essentially composed of opalized fluorite which generates a characteristic mixture of blue violets, rich purples, lavender colors. It has veins or spots mixing quartz, chalcedony, dolomite, rhodonite, black manganese oxides, bertrandite (containing beryllium), white or yellow solid opal.
Consequently, the hardness of this stone is between 4 and 7 depending on the minerals that compose it. The Tiffany Stone was once called bertrandite. This name did not really suit it, because it only contains 1 to 2% bertrandite, beryllium silicate. This beryllium silicate was exploited in this mine. In fact, almost all of the stone was crushed to produce beryllium.
However, employees diverted some specimens and passed them on to collectors. It should be noted that the Tiffany Stone has received other names such as “opal fluorite, opalized fluorite”. It was even incorrectly named “bertrandite”, because this mineral represents only a few percent of the rock. It was even given the name "Ice Cream Stone" because of its deliciously nuanced color.
For the record, the Brush Wellman mine was accessible to collectors. Thus, there is an “old stock” where the most beautiful specimens of Tiffany Stone are found. It was the miners who took them out of the mine or privileged people allowed to collect this incredible rock on certain private lands. Thus, nowadays, there are very few authentic Tiffany stones, so potential buyers are recommended to verify the origin of the stone.
Tiffany Stone has the incredible particularity of being fluorescent under ultraviolet light. It forms nodules surrounded by a gangue (a set of materials of no economic interest) in this case made of limestone, from which it must be freed in order to reveal its beautiful blue color due to the fluorite. However, depending on its inclusions, it can take on other colors. It can therefore appear in different crystal systems (amorphous, cubic, etc.). The purple variety remains the most popular.
This marvelous purple stone is wrongly believed to be named after Tiffany and Co, the famous luxury goods retailer. However, this company has never been associated with mining or stone. It seems more likely that the stone was named after the daughter of a miner who worked at the site. But the name of this minor is not found in any written document.
The main deposit is in the United States.
