Hematoid quartz is a little-known variety of quartz. It is a mineral which belongs to the group of silicates, subgroup of tectosilicates, essentially composed of silicon dioxide. This variety of quartz surprises with its beautiful red, orange-red or yellow-orange color. These magnificent shades are due to the presence of hematite and/or limonite inclusions.

For the record, hematite is a mineral species that contains iron oxide and traces of titanium, aluminum and manganese. Limonite is a cluster of microcrystalline iron hydroxides.

Hematoid quartz is much less known than rutile quartz or rose quartz. However, it is very popular because of its beautiful red, yellow or orange colors. It is also very popular in the world of lithotherapy because of its numerous protective, amplifying and purifying virtues.

Hematoid quartz is also a variety of rock crystal, sometimes nicknamed “fire quartz” or “ferruginous quartz”. It presents a trigonal crystal system with a hexagonal lattice. It has a hardness of 7 on the Mohs scale. In comparison, diamond has the highest hardness, 10 on this same scale.

The etymology of the name quartz can be explained with two hypotheses. Either the name quartz comes from the name “quaterz” meaning bad ores until the 16th century or the other hypothesis would be the contraction of the German name “gewärz” designating an excrescence.

In the Middle Ages, this name quartz was applied to all crystals. Georgius Agricola (1494-1555), a famous scholar considered a specialist in mineralogy and metallurgy, restricted this term to rock crystals.

Hematoid comes from two Greek names that can be translated as follows: “hemato” from the Greek “aïmatos” meaning blood and “-oid” meaning “form, appearance”.

In 1801, the name hematoid quartz was definitively assigned to this surprising red quartz by René Just Haüy (1743-1822), famous French mineralogist. For your information, there are no legends or myths regarding this stone, due to its recent discovery.

The main deposits are located in Brazil, Madagascar, China, South Africa, etc.
