The origin of its name comes from the Latin word “purpura” (purple) and was recognized by the IMA. Discovered in 1905, this mineral was so named thanks to its particular color, reminiscent of purple, and striking by Louis Caryl Graton and Théodore Schaller. The rare purpurite stone was discovered only 100 years ago. No legend is attached to it.
Opaque, the color ranges from pink to red, purple, violet and reddish. The stone is satin. Its color can sometimes be iridescent or have a phenomenon of pleochroism. After alteration, it becomes brown and even black because of the manganese oxidation reaction. It is manganese that gives purpurite its color.
The stone is composed of an iron phosphate then sedimentary manganese. The crystal system is orthorhombic. Its hardness varies between 4 and 4.5.
The deposits are found mainly in Namibia.
However, the stone is also found in the United States (in South Dakota), Australia, South Africa, Madagascar, France and Portugal (Guarda region). More rarely, it can be observed in Rwanda, Austria, China, Sweden and Spain.
In Lithotherapy, purpurite is known to develop brain function.
It is attributed with anti-stress properties.
It calms the nerves, removes anxiety and worry from the lives of its followers. It symbolizes freedom and initiation.
