Tiger's eye is a striped mineral with yellow and brown colors. Silica has gradually replaced these fibers through the phenomenon of pseudomorphosis (one mineral appears with the appearance of another).
This stone, like all stones bearing the name "eye", belongs to the family of microcrystalline quartz. There is also the red-brown bull's eye (which in some cases is a heated tiger's eye), the blue-tinted hawk's eye, and the metallic-tinted iron eye. These stones exhibit remarkable chatoyancy. This is an optical effect formerly called cat's eye.
The name tiger's eye appeared later in Europe, due to its resemblance to the eye of the wild animal. In reality, it refers to the fibers of the stone that display a gradient of colors, changing depending on the viewing angle. There is also golden tiger's eye. This is a tiger's eye with golden yellow colors.
Tiger's eye is an opaque and hard stone. It has a hardness of 7 on the Mohs scale. In comparison, diamond has the highest hardness, at 10 on the same scale. Today, this stone is widely used in jewelry making. It is also used in lithotherapy due to its energetic powers.
In Mesopotamia, we find traces of the tiger's eye, then called the eye of Bellus (oculus Bellus). At that time, Bellus Marduk was an important god in Babylon. He was appointed to exterminate the goddess Tiamat, mother of the gods. After this battle, he pacified the gods and gave each one a function. Then, he created the heavens, the earth, the waters, the years, the stars, etc. The other gods founded Babylon where his palace was built.
Another legend tells that before each departure on long journeys, men would make their wives drink a very special concoction. They would soak a tiger's eye stone in milk. The goal was to ensure their wives' fidelity, or at least avoid pregnancy in the event of an infraction.
During archaeological excavations, amulets made of tiger's eye were discovered. They date back to the Roman Empire. At that time, Roman warriors went into battle with a tiger's eye amulet. It was supposed to protect them from injury and death.
In the Middle Ages, tiger's eye was used to ward off evil spells, evil spirits, and other spells. It protected against poisoning, insect bites, and venomous snake stings. For millennia, tiger's eye has held a powerful protective role.
First identified in South Africa in the 1800s, this stone fetched extremely high prices. Indeed, it was thought to be extremely rare. Then, in the early 20th century, other deposits were discovered and the price of tiger's eye plummeted. This made the stone more accessible to the general public.
The main deposits are located in South Africa, Australia, China, etc.
Tiger's eye, like many stones bearing the name eye, has powerful protective powers. It is also a grounding stone. It protects its wearer from harmful influences by reflecting them back to their source. Thus, it makes the wearer aware of the consequences of their actions.
This stone develops self-confidence and confidence in others. It encourages introspection and allows one to discover the origin of certain emotional blockages. It reveals the true personalities of the people around one. It brings courage and boldness, strengthening determination and self-confidence. By lowering emotional barriers, friendships and romantic relationships are more harmonious.
Tiger's Eye brings calm and balance. This mineral helps overcome negative emotions such as worry, anxiety, restlessness, and shyness. It is ideal for protecting against jealous and envious people. It fosters self-reliance, strong independence of mind, and a beautiful freedom of thought.
This mineral brings energy and vitality. It develops the desire to make plans and achieve one's goals. It is perfect for students, people in training or retraining. It increases concentration and memorization. This stone aids creativity and improves open-mindedness. It gives the ability to overcome life's difficulties. It stimulates willpower and allows for greater self-assertion.
