Larimar belongs to the large family of quartz silicates. It is in fact a relatively rare pectolite. Larimar has a hardness that ranges from 4.5 to 7 on the Mohs scale. It most often remains at 7. It sometimes has certain inclusions of hematite, dentrolite and chalcocite. Its composition is ideal in jewelry to create splendid jewelry or other ornamental creations.
Larimar is a blue mineral stone and usually comes from the Dominican Republic. Its color can range from white to deep blue with the presence of light veins. It has sometimes been nicknamed "Caribbean turquoise" or "Dominican turquoise". But these names can be misleading, so they were eventually abandoned in favor of the name larimar.
Larimar is a mineral from volcanic rock. It is created under specific conditions. Its formation took place within erupting volcanoes. The presence of copper mixed with iron is noted. All these elements are reduced to boiling in the chimneys of volcanoes up to 250 °C. Many chemical reactions take place, then after several million years of cooling, the fabulous blue stone finally appears. The blue color of this mineral is due to the presence of copper during its formation. The bluer the stone, the more expensive it is.
The exploitation of this fabulous stone is very recent, since it dates back to 1976. However, in 1916, this stone was discovered by Father Domingo Fuertes de Loren in the Dominican Republic. He named it "rock of Atlantis". However, he never received the exploitation permit, because the authorities did not know what mineral it was.
In 1974, Miguel Mendez and a friend were walking along a beach when they noticed a curious reflection in the water. A rock of a magnificent blue color was lying at the bottom of the water. They followed its trail and discovered a source where this stone came from, namely the larimar deposit. Its exploitation at the bottom of the Bahoruco mountain range in the Dominican Republic would begin 2 years later.
Larimar is partly named after Miguel Mendez's daughter, a contraction of "Larissa" and "mar", meaning sea in Spanish. Larimar has been classified as a fine stone since 1979.
This stone is the source of a particular craze in New Age circles. Indeed, some believe that there is a link between the incredible blue stone and the legendary Atlantis. For the record, Atlantis is an island the size of a continent, inherited by the god of the sea Poseidon. This continent was swallowed up following a decision by Zeus.
The main deposit is located in the Dominican Republic.
