The different stones owe their name, either according to their color, or according to their physical characteristics or the legends which are attached.

There are different versions as to the name of the dragon blood jasper stone. The most recent explanation of its etymology is due to the location of one of its first deposits, that is located in the Limpopo province in South Africa, very close to a hill in the shape of a dragon.

Another version: dragon's blood jasper was named after the spots of red which evoke spots of blood, in this case that of a dragon. A legend relates that a courageous Scandinavian warrior wanted to defend his people against a ferocious dragon who was terrorizing them. The dragon agreed to fight with this young warrior, convinced that he had no chance. But the warrior was cunning and had many resources. He took advantage of the dragon and cut off its head with his beautiful green jasper sword. It was splashed with the dragon's blood and stained. Thus was born dragon blood jasper.

In ancient times, the Greeks considered the red spots to be petrified drops of blood. Thus, the green and red stone had virtues which prevented wounds from bleeding too much. It stopped the bleeding. Dragon's blood jasper has a hardness of 6.5 to 7 on the Mohs scale. For comparison, diamond has the highest hardness, 10 on this same scale.
