Red jasper belongs to the large jasper family and is undoubtedly the best known of all.

This magnificent red stone is from the microcrystalline quartz family. Red jasper forms deep within the earth at very high pressures. We can say that it contains a minimum of 85% silica with numerous inclusions.

It is these inclusions which will give all the characteristics to jasper in general. Depending on their appearance and color, many jaspers have been identified. We find Dalmatian or leopard jasper, printed jasper or yellow jasper, etc.

There are also inclusions in various colors and shapes such as landscape jasper or ocean jasper. This type of jasper is also called orbicular jasper because of its curved inclusions.

Furthermore, jasper takes its name from the Greek “iasis” and the Latin “jaspidem” which mean “speckled stone”. Indeed, this mineral can also have a spotted or even striped appearance (example: zebra jasper).

Compared to other jaspers, red jasper has a higher concentration of iron dioxide: which gives it this incredible red color. This type of jasper is the most widespread and best known of all. Thanks to numerous archaeological excavations, we have been able to trace the different stories and legends linked to red jasper.

Among the Egyptians, red jasper is the symbol of eternal life. They carved this fabulous stone in the form of a beetle or made all kinds of jewelry. They put a scarab in the tombs of their dead to accompany them on the great journey. They made pendants with strong protective powers, particularly against the bites of venomous beasts. They made numerous statuettes in homage to their gods.

Among the Greeks and Romans, this red stone was associated with their goddesses. For example, the Greeks honored Gaia, the Earth goddess, in order to have good harvests. Then, the Romans honored Bon Dea, goddess of fertility for having children.

In the Christian religion, many stories explain the formation of this red jasper during the crucifixion of Christ. Thus, the blood of Christ, spilling on the ground, gave birth to red jasper. Furthermore, the texts of Revelation indicate that the throne of Christ is decorated with red jasper. In the Bible, red jasper adorns Aaron's breastplate. In the Middle Ages, it was also the stone of martyrs.

The American Indians protected themselves from attacks by wild beasts by carrying a red jasper with them. Wearing red jasper bracelets during certain rituals caused the arrival of rain.

In Asian countries, this stone was reserved for important personalities. They wore it in the form of fang-shaped pendants containing the souls of great warriors. Among the Japanese, red jasper is sacred and we find it as an ornament for homes, sculptures and religious buildings.

Nowadays, red jasper is widely used in jewelry for making all kinds of jewelry. Its hardness is between 6.5 and 7 on the Mohs scale. It is also a stone filled with benefits in lithotherapy.
