Burmese jade is actually jadeite. In 1863, Alexis Damour, French mineralogist (1808-1902) dissociated jadeite and nephrite in the composition of jade. Jadeite comes from the pyroxene family, minerals from the inosilicate group. They are common components of igneous and metamorphic rocks. This pyroxene results from the metamorphism of sodium-rich serpentines.

In France, jadeite and nephrite were called jade without distinction before the 19th century. In China, jadeite appeared in the middle of the 18th century. It came from Burma. It turns out that all ancient jade used in China before this period was nephrite.

Jadeite owes its magnificent hues to the presence of impurities or metal ions. Without them, jadeite would be colorless or white, with a milky appearance. The intense green specimens have this color thanks to the iron they contain. Purple-colored varieties include manganese. Burmese jadeite jade or imperial jade is colored by chrome.

There is also a black jade called “magnetite jade”. In fact, it is mainly a trade name designating a black jade with magnetite inclusions. We also come across the term “chloromelanite” compared to jades. However, it corresponds to a dark green pyroxene, with black veins.

A third mineral is found in jade: kosmochlor. It has a constitution similar to jadeite. Indeed, it is a sodium and chromium silicate from a meteorite that fell in Toluca, Mexico. Its name comes from the German “kosmische” meaning “cosmic” and the Greek “khlôros” which means “green”.

In 1963, Swiss gemologist Eduard Gübelin discovered maw sit sit in the Mandalay region of northern Burma. It is a metamorphic aggregate composed of chromite, kosmochlor, jadeite, etc. All these components form a mosaic of blacks and greens constituting the maw sit sit. It is also very often confused with nephrite jade. Indeed, nephrite jade is very common in these regions of Burma.

Maw sit sit jade is a jade that is found on the same extraction sites as those of imperial jade.

Throughout Asia, jade remains a stone symbol of luck, health and prosperity. It is offered on special occasions, such as births, weddings, birthdays and graduations.

The most important location for jadeite mining in the world is located in northern Burma. It is essential to emphasize that this deposit is the one which produces the majority of high quality jadeites offered on the international market.

Then in 1973, the jade deposit, where pre-Columbian civilizations found their jade, was rediscovered. This alluvial deposit produces a magnificent, translucent jade, with a color ranging from blue to green.

In jewelry, the most sought-after jadeite is the emerald green colored jadeite from Burma. Furthermore, purple or blue jadeites are also very popular. It can be cut into cabochon shapes, rings, necklaces, bracelets, etc. Bracelets in the shape of a rigid ring, called “bangle” are very popular with Chinese customers.

The main deposits of Burmese jade are in Burma!
