The first traces of larvikite date back more than 295 million years BC, to the Permian period. The exact date of its discovery is unknown. The main deposits of this stone are located in the Larvik region of Norway, hence its name larvikite.
Waldemar Cristofer Brogger, Norwegian geologist (1851 - 1940), identified larvikite for the first time and described it in his work "Eruptive rocks around Oslo" published in 1894.
Larvikite is an magmatic rock composed mainly of feldspar. It is a mineral containing little quartz, but aluminum, sodium, potassium, calcium and silicon. It also has augite and biotite.
Its formation takes place at a depth of 30 km and its crystallization takes place close to the surface in sub-volcanic zones.
All the elements constituting larvikite give it an opaque or translucent appearance, shades varying from light blue to dark blue, black reflections, steel gray or even silvery bronze. It has a hardness of 6 on the Mohs scale.
Larvikite is reputed to have been the origin of the construction of Oslo. It was often used as a solid material in construction. It was very often used in the manufacture of ornamental objects, tombstones, slabs and in the creation of facades.
It is found in large quantities in Oslo. It is also recognized as the national stone of Norway in 2007. It is found under other names such as “blue granite”, “royal blue pearl granite”, “black moonstone” or “granite of bird”.
Larvikite is a stone present on the facades of many monuments and buildings, sometimes even inside as ornament. It is visible at the UN headquarters in New York, on the mosque of the Sultanate of Brunei, etc.
As an anecdote, the bust of the famous anthropologist Thor Heyerdahl (1914 - 2002), known for his raft expedition between the coasts of South America and Polynesia, was decorated with larvikite. It is currently on display at the Casa Chacona Museum in Tenerife.
In conclusion, this magnificent rock is widely used in the construction of buildings. Nowadays, it is also used to make jewelry. Its reflections make it a special and unique stone.
The main deposits are in Norway. It can also be found in Canada, China, Madagascar, etc.
Larvikite is an excellent protective stone. She absorbs the negative energies around her and then eliminates them. It gives the possibility of supporting a loved one in their suffering without being imbued with the discomfort they reflect.
Coming from the depths of the Earth, it is also a formidable anchoring stone. It encourages us to find our origins and bring consciousness back to the present moment. It allows you to set goals and achieve them. It develops realism and encourages introspection.
During states of intense fatigue or psychological exhaustion, wearing a larvikite provides the strength to overcome these blocking emotions. The wearer of this stone can then overcome them and regain a certain serenity.
This stone is particularly recommended for hypersensitive people. It has soothing virtues, a role as a shield against all kinds of evils and sorrows. It is very beneficial to them while providing them with great analytical skills. It helps to better control one's emotions and outbursts of anger.
Larvikite promotes reflection, creativity and imagination. It is perfect for all artists, writers or anyone involved in creation. It is also recommended for people working in the social, medical or educational sectors. Indeed, it develops the sense of listening, understanding and compassion. It allows you to adopt the right attitude in all circumstances.
