It is composed of fossilized wood where all traces of organic matter have been replaced by minerals (most often silicates, such as quartz), while retaining the original structure of the wood.

The process of petrification occurs when wood is buried under a layer of sediment, where it is first preserved due to a lack of oxygen, before mineral-rich water circulates through the sediment and replaces little to the wood cells by minerals. It probably takes less than a hundred years for some pieces of wood to be petrified.
