Banded agate is characterized by a composition of concentric or parallel zones with varied colors. This variety of quartz includes variants such as onyx (black color), carnelian (orange color), sardonyx (brown to dark orange color), jasper (multiple colors), and heliotrope (more or less dark green).

Banded agate comes in a variety of colors. It has a hardness of 6 to 7 on the Mohs scale. In comparison, only diamond has a hardness of 10, the highest on this same scale. Its crystal system is trigonal and its luster is vitreous.

The formation of agates results from a silica composition due to the presence of devitrified volcanic ash, rainwater or spring water, mineral oxides of iron, manganese, etc. It is these mineral oxides that provide the colors of the different agates: white, red, blue, gray, brown or with black bands. Moreover, the bands of the agate are due to a rhythmic crystallization. Banded agate has white or cream bands.
