Cherry blossom agate was discovered very recently in Madagascar. It is sometimes called “sakura agate”. It is less known than Botswana agate, crazy lace agate, fire agate or even moss agate. However, it remains much rarer.

It is a wonder of nature that can have different colors, such as pink, salmon, orange, white, gray or brown. Several of these hues mix on cherry blossom agate and form various patterns.

In most cases, cherry blossom agate has a very light pink color with white inclusions due to the presence of minerals. Its inclusions, in an almost transparent stone, often have the shape of petals. Its appearance is both opaque and milky.

Similar patterns are found on other stones, such as kambaba jasper or orbicular jasper. Obviously, it is these incredible inclusions that make the stone original.

For the record, the name agate comes from the Akhates River (now the Dirillo) which is located in southern Italy and Sicily. Many varieties of agate were discovered in this river. The Greek philosopher Theophrastus (371 BC / 288 BC) then named these stones “agates”.

The agate group has a large number of varieties in varying colors, with all kinds of designs on them. Some of these agates are true works of art that nature offers us. Cherry Blossom Agate is one of the most magnificent agates.

This mineral belongs to different groups and categories and is notably classified among chalcedony, silicates and quartz. It is mainly made of silicon dioxide. Agates also contain devitrified volcanic ash, rainwater or spring water, oxides of iron minerals, manganese, etc. It is these oxides which determine the hues and patterns of these agates.

Cherry blossom agate has a hardness of 6.5 to 7 on the Mohs scale. For comparison, diamond has the highest hardness, 10 on this same scale. It is therefore perfect for a jeweler.

The main deposits are found in Madagascar.
