Kunsite owes its name to the American gemstone expert GF Kunze who studied it for the first time in 1903 in the USA where it was discovered. Its origins are Brazil, Madagascar, Burma and the United States.
It is a variety of spodumene from the pyroxene group. It is composed of lithium and aluminum silicate.

It is a rare stone that occurs in the form of flattened crystals.
