Traces of azurite have been found in many civilizations since the 27th century BC. The Egyptians had already been exploiting it from the mines of Wadi Magharah since almost 5,000 years before Christ.

Then, the Egyptians of the 4th Dynasty (last dynasty of ancient Egypt) used it in ointments to relieve wounds. They also used it as a blue pigment. Then, they created splendid murals or decorated small works of art. Furthermore, seers or priests painted a third eye on their foreheads, convinced that this would accentuate their powers.

At the same time, the Greeks named this stone kuanos (cyan). They also considered it a stone with immense healing power. The Romans named it caeruleum. The Romans and Greeks extracted this stone from mines on the island of Cyprus or Armenia. Pliny the Elder, born in 23 AD, named it “armenium”.

In the Mayan civilization, blue azurite had sacred power and symbolized the wisdom of the heart. The Mayans wore it and entered into communication with higher intelligence.

In the Middle Ages, this blue stone was imported from Germany and Hungary for the purpose of coloring manuscripts. This stone had a huge role in the making of frescoes and all kinds of artistic works. For example, the creation entirely in azurite of the ceiling vault of a chapel in Padua.

In 1824, the name azurite, coming from the Persian “lazhward”, was given by the mineralogist and geologist, François Sulpice Beudant, to this fabulous stone in reference to its magnificent blue color. Medieval mining companions called these stones “mountain blue” or “copper blue,” based on their copper content.

Nowadays, this stone, in different shades of blue, is primarily intended for the manufacture of jewelry. This stone is a copper carbonate. This mineral belongs to the category of soft and not very dense stones. Azurite is essentially blue in color. It can have an intense ultramarine blue, even bluish black or sometimes matte blue.

This stone is said to be an unstable mineral, because it can change into malachite due to oxidation by the phenomenon of pseudomorphosis (a mineral that appears with the appearance of another mineral). In nature, it can be found in different forms: massive, earthy, bulbous or spherical.

The main deposits are found in Peru, Mexico, Russia, Morocco, Madagascar.
