A legend tells that in the 15th century, in a gallery located on the mountainside, miners discovered with amazement bouquets of mineral flowers and petrified plants of various colors. They decided to name them “iron flowers”.
In reality, aragonite was discovered in 1609 by Anselmus Boëtius de Boodt, a famous mineralogist. He named it “stillatitius lapis”. Its appearance in the form of bouquets of flowers with more or less long tips, brown, blue, green colors would be the origin of this nickname “iron flowers”.
Then it was the German geologist, Abraham Gottlob Werner (1749 - 1818) who gave it the name aragonite. Indeed, he took up a Spanish legend which tells of a young girl from the town of Molina d'Aragon who was refused marriage to her beloved because she was being promoted to another suitor. She shed many tears which transformed into aragonite on contact with the earth. He had assumed that this land was Aragonese when in reality it was Castilian. The name stuck despite this confusion.
This stone is an important ally for scientists, because it is sensitive to CO2 levels. It provides information about the acidification of oceans and seas. Its presence supports the good health of salt water.
Aragonite is a raw mineral with different shapes that belongs to the calcium carbonate family. It has crystals that can be up to 30 cm high. Depending on its various mineral inclusions, aragonite can have several colors: red, white, gray, green, brown or even colorless.
Its crystal system is orthorhombic, a straight prism with a rectangular base with 3 axes of different lengths. This stone has the particularity of being formed within living beings. Thus, it is biosynthesized by several species. Its constitution is found in the mother-of-pearl and pearls of oysters, the shell of many shellfish and on hard corals.
It can also form by dissolution inside caves, linked to biological activity. When aragonite forms in caves, it can have shapes such as needles, round aggregates (called cave pearls) or fibrous aggregates (called iron flowers).
The main deposits are located in Peru, Canada, Australia, Morocco, Brazil, etc.
In Lithotherapy, brown aragonite is a soothing stone and an anchoring stone. It releases positive energies for the mind and contributes to anchoring for more serenity. This stone allows you to take a step back in case of overwork. It restores inner calm and therefore concentration.
On a daily basis, brown aragonite soothes anxiety, fears, anguish and stress. It is ideal for people suffering from hypersensitivity, because it makes it easier to channel their thoughts, while managing negative emotions.
It brings calm to people who are angry or filled with resentment and bitterness. This way, they forgive more easily. This gem calms inner agitation, gives the strength to evacuate negative emotions. It promotes harmony in relationships within the family or within the workplace.
This appeasement, provided by brown aragonite, encourages meditation. It frees the speech of individuals suffering from lack of self-confidence. At the same time, it teaches patience and intellectual power.
This stone is recommended for students, because it encourages concentration and avoids dispersion of attention.
It is said that it helps fight against internal cold such as, for example, the cold of loneliness. It causes a warmth that is felt even in the mind.
