Collection: Agate

Agate belongs to the chalcedony family. This stone was discovered in abundance in a river in the south of Sicily, then called Akhatès (nowadays: the Dirillo). The Greek philosopher Theophrastus gave it its name because of the river and called this stone “agate”.

In this river, agates of all colors were discovered, but especially white agate. Its whiteness ranges from pure transparency to complete opacity.

White agate thus became a stone of peace and also ent the symbol of purity and virginity in the biblical sense of the word.

Agate appears from the beginning in the history of civilizations. It is said that Persian magicians burned agates to ward off storms. The Greeks and Egyptians made many objects from agate, including jewelry, vases, and sacred objects where the whiteness represented serenity. It is a stone very rich in symbols.

A Greek legend tells us that King Mithridates the Great collected agate objects of all colors and particularly white agate. He had more than 4,000 pieces. Mithridates I thought that white agate protected him and he always kept one on him. He was captured by the guard of Antigone the One-Eyed, then managed to escape. Subsequently, he expanded his power and proclaimed himself king of Pontus in 296 BC. He then founded his own dynasty.

In Greek mythology, white agate is associated, through its purity, with the goddess Gaia. The latter gave birth to many creatures. She was invoked regularly and white-skinned animals were offered to her as sacrifices.

Among the Romans:

We find traces of white agate in Roman civilization: the Romans associated it with Aurora, goddess of dawn and mother of the winds. Then, white agate was related to Bona dea, the goddess of virtue and virginity. Legend has it that she was the wife of Faunus, and that she never left her room so as not to see other men. One day she got drunk and went out. Her husband began to beat her to death. Then, consumed by remorse, he made her immortal and covered her with white agates as a sign of respect for her purity. She became the protective goddess of women and their fertility.

The Persians, Greeks, Romans and even in Anglo-Saxon mythology, white agate was considered a protective stone to stay healthy and avoid dangers, including snake venom and insect bites. . The Celts linked white agate to Ceridwen, goddess of fertility and death.

Today, we find the main deposits of white agate in India, the United States, Brazil, Italy and Madagascar.

This is also why it is called “the agate of peace”. It amplifies any positive feeling and any sensation of sweetness. It brings you light into your existence. Also, it can trigger great sincerity, a lot of kindness in you.

All its qualities allow white agate to calm mental suffering. It soothes unexplained anxieties and uncontrolled fears. It starts with self-acceptance and then as a result, causes self-confidence.
